I heard this from the Mister today. I spent the morning out running around. The Mister was not in the mood to hit a few garage sales and the farmer's market. Can't blame him. He's a guy. So I spent a few hours out and about, bought some sweet potatoes and found 4...yes 4.... garage sales with jack-diddly in the way of books. That's what I was searching for...books. I don't enjoy paying full price and scored some really good ones at a local garage sale in May. Nada today.
So I come home later to eat some lunch and see if the Mister is ready to go maybe hit a few used books stores and the only thrift store in a 17 mile radius. He's willing to keep me company but not
exuberant about it. So...I ask him if he's "
ok"? And I hear, "Yes Honey, I'm just busy in my mind."
Wait. What??????
I burst out laughing and so did he.
He's not even sure what he meant by that. But it cracked us up in all it's ridiculousness (is that a word?).
I'm busy in my mind. I'm going to have to remember that one. "Honey you want to have sex?" "Later. I'm busy in my mind." "You ready for the gym?" "Not yet. I'm busy in my mind."
So I leave him and his mind. I decide a half-day of shopping by myself would be good. I could do what I wanted for as long I felt like it and there wouldn't be anyone to notice. Good day. Before I leave I Goo.
gle used books and find what I consider a not so
reliable list. I decide to dust off the yellow pages and look there instead. Folks around these parts write checks at the store and still use phone books.
Score! I find 6 listed and two are a few miles away. Yahoo! I head out to the first one. It's a 1/2 mile up the road. But alas....there's not a used book store in the shopping center. I pull over. Call the number. Disconnected.
Hmmm. OK. I better call the next one. "
notarealbookstore.com we're open M-F from 8-5."
Harumph. No
bueno. Call the next one and delightful older woman answers. She frankly sounded too perky to be working in a used bookstore. So I dare to ask the question, "Hello. Are you a used bookstore?" "No we are not." kinda snooty. Me, "Terribly sorry I found you listed in the Yellow Pages under Used Bookstores". Madame Snooty, "Yes we know. It's a mistake." WELL. I put the last address in the
Nav and take a look at how far away it is. The
first leg of the trip says 19 miles down local Highway
somethingerother. There goes that. Not one used bookstore in my vicinity. I'm in a fairly big city. Apparently no one in this "big" city wants used books? Maybe they don't read. Yeah. I think that's it. One thrift store, no used bookstores. Just a bunch of people who don't need to save money I guess. Or used books are "beneath" them?
Farg if I know. Frustrating to say the least.
BUT we have one thrift store. The Army is my saving grace. The selection of books is tiny but I found 4 for 99 cents each. That made me happy. I'm no longer out of reading material. I have 2 Agatha Christie books that look interesting which will be fun.
One thrift store in the area. 4 garage sales in a 30 mile radius. Are people pack rats? Or it's not garage sale season? I've still got a lot to learn about living here. I need to let it go. :-)
What I do know is Fall is about to arrive. I'm so excited for cool weather and the changing leaves. This is one of my favorite times. So beautiful.
Happy Saturday.
